With the 14th pick in the 2010 First-Year Player Draft on Monday, the Milwaukee Brewers selected RHP Dylan Covey from Maranatha High School in Pasadena, Calif.
Covey, who has been compared to the Giants’ Matt Cain and Chad Billingsley of the Dodgers, throws a power fastball and a sharp curve, while his changeup has been said to need some work in the Minors.
The selection of a power arm by the Brewers comes as little surprise with pitching being the most obvious need for the club.
Covey was named Gatorade’s California Baseball Player of the Year for 2010 last Tuesday after posting a 7-1 record with three saves, a 0.40 ERA, 138 strikeouts and 20 walks in 70.2 innings while batting .414 with a home run and 17 RBIs.
Perfect Game USA’s No. 2 prospect and Baseball America’s No. 4, Covey has previously signed to play at the University of San Diego before being drafted.
Stayed tuned to the Brewers homepage for further updates on the Brewers’ first-round selection when they become available.
