Twins still hopeful for Pavano

Twins GM Bill Smith told the St. Paul Pioneer Press on Wednesday that he’s still hopeful of re-signing free agent right-hander Carl Pavano, who, of course, is also on the Brewers’ radar. Smith told the newspaper that he’d like to re-sign both Pavano and first baseman/designated hitter Jim Thome, but that, “They have more to do with the ultimate decision than I do.”

So the market for Pavano continues to simmer. His agent, Tom O’Connell, told MLB.com’s Kelly Thesier on Tuesday that he was in no hurry.
“We really don’t have a timetable for a decision right now,” O’Connell said. “Once we feel we’ve found the right situation, we’ll act accordingly, but we’re just going to continue to take our time.”
O’Connell wouldn’t say whether he had received any hard offers yet, and the Twins would not comment, either. Brewers GM Doug Melvin told reporters on Tuesday that he had yet to make a formal offer for Pavano.
The Pioneer Press did an interesting bit of speculating about Pavano, who probably would like a deal similar to fellow 34-year-old Ted Lilly’s three-year, $33 million pact with the Dodgers. Because he has earned more than $50 million since 2005, the newspaper wondered aloud whether Pavano would base his choice on factors other than total dollars or term. On one hand, that would seem to favor the Twins because Pavano enjoyed pitching there in 2010. On the other hand, if there is some flexibility in the length of the contract, it could help the Brewers, who don’t want to go three years for Pavano.
Stay tuned.
