Gomez to begin rehab assignment

The Brewers just announced that center fielder Carlos Gomez will begin a Minor League rehabilitation assignment on Friday at Triple-A Nashville. He expects to return to active duty for the Brewers one week later.

Gomez, who has not played since he was struck in the head by a pitch on Aug. 2 in Chicago, is eligible for reinstatement from the 15-day disabled list on Aug. 18 but he doesn’t expect to rejoin the Brewers until two days later. That’s because the big league team finishes a brief, two-game series in St. Louis on the 18th, then is off on Aug. 19.
“Why fly to St. Louis for one day, then fly home and be off?” he said. “This way I can play for Nashville two [extra] days and come back.”
Gomez isn’t shy about the fact he would have preferred to avoid a DL stint in the first place. The Brewers list his injury as a concussion, but Gomez says he suffered no symptoms at all other than a sore spot where the Brian Schlitter pitch struck the left side of his helmet. The Brewers say results of a cognitive and motor skills test were inconclusive so they decided to be cautious, but Gomez says that test was flawed because of a poor Spanish translation.
“I really don’t understand the reason,” for the DL assignment, Gomez said, “but it’s OK. I’m ready to go.”

Cain in lineup

The Brewers are putting Lorenzo Cain right to work after his Friday afternoon call-up, starting him in tonight’s series-opener against the Astros. With left-hander Wandy Rodriguez on the hill for Houston, it’s a good opportunity to rest Jim Edmonds and his sore Achilles.

Cain was promoted to replace Carlos Gomez, who was placed on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to Tuesday, with a concussion. Chalk this up as a precautionary move, because as I write this, Gomez is part of the group taking early batting practice.
Here’s the lineup:
Rickie Weeks  2B
Corey Hart  RF
Prince Fielder  1B
Ryan Braun  LF
Casey McGehee  3B
Lorenzo Cain  CF
Alcides Escobar SS
George Kottaras  C
Dave Bush  RHP

Gomez to DL with concussion

The Brewers continued their cautious approach with center fielder Carlos Gomez on Friday by placing him on the 15-day disabled list with a concussion, suffered Monday when he was beaned by Cubs pitcher Brian Schlitter at Wrigley Field. Replacing Gomez on the active roster is outfielder Lorenzo Cain, who will begin his second stint with the team tonight at Miller Park.

Edmonds starting again in CF

We’ve yet to receive any further update on Carlos Gomez after he was taken to the hospital Monday night for a CT scan, but if the lineup is any indication, he’s unlikely to play Tuesday.
Manager Ken Macha originally planned to start Gomez on Tuesday after starting Jim Edmonds on Monday night, but Edmonds is in there again for the second game of the series.
If Gomez is unavailable, it leaves the Brewers with just two pinch hitters on the bench as Macha prefers not to use his only backup catching option in George Kottaras.
Here’s the rest of the lineup:

Hart  RF
Braun  LF
Fielder  1B
McGehee  3B
Edmonds  CF

Business as usual in series opener vs. Giants

Nothing too surprising in the Brewers’ lineup for today’s afternoon contest with the San Francisco Giants.

Carlos Gomez is in center field with a lefty on the mound in Jonathan Sanchez for the Giants, rookie catcher Jonathan Lucroy is behind the plate, and Casey McGehee is back at third base after taking a much-deserved day off on Sunday in St. Louis.
Here’s the rest of the lineup:
Weeks  2B
Hart  RF
Fielder  1B
Braun  LF
McGehee  3B

Gomez back in lineup vs. lefty Rodriguez

No surprises once again for the Brewers. The only change from Tuesday night to Wednesday afternoon is the lefty-righty swap in center field.

With lefty Wandy Rodriguez on the mound for the Astros, speedy Carlos Gomez is back in center for the Crew. As a result, veteran Jim Edmonds gets the day off after playing the first two games of the series.
Rookie catcher Jonathan Lucroy gets bumped up ahead of Gomez as usual, whereas he typically bats behind Edmonds. The rest of the lineup remains the same:
Weeks  2B
Hart  RF
Fielder  1B
Braun  LF
McGehee  1B
Lucroy  C
Gomez  CF
Escobar  SS
Bush  P

Lucroy, Gomez back in lineup for series finale

After a scheduled day off for Jonathan Lucroy on Saturday with lefty Randy Wolf on the mound, the rookie catcher is back in the lineup for Sunday’s series finale with the Mariners.

In addition to Lucroy, Carlos Gomez is back in center field with lefty Jason Vargas on the mound for Seattle.
Aside from those two, however, the rest of the lineup shows no changes:
Weeks  2B
Hart  RF
Fielder  1B
Braun  LF
McGehee  3B
Lucroy  C

Edmonds, Kottaras in starting lineup

One night after belting back-to-back home runs in the fourth to put the Brewers on top against the Mariners, speedy center fielder Carlos Gomez and rookie catcher Jonathan Lucroy got the day off Saturday.

Gomez belted the eventual game-winning home run against the Mariners, but the speedy center fielder is back on the bench, in favor of left-handed hitting Jim Edmonds.

It’s beginning to appear as though manager Ken Macha plans to use Gomez and Edmonds in a strict platoon with Edmonds facing right-handed starters and Gomez starting versus lefties.
Behind the plate, catcher George Kottaras gets the nod as Lucroy sits one day after hitting his first career home run and taking his first curtain call.
Here’s the rest of the lineup:
Weeks  2B
Hart  RF
Fielder  1B
Braun  LF
McGehee  3B
Edmonds  CF

Gomez back in center field vs. Mariners

With the Mariners and former Brewers scouting director Jack Zduriencik in town for Milwaukee’s final Interleague series of the season, manager Ken Macha has speedy center fielder Carlos Gomez back in the lineup.

Gomez and Edmonds have been splitting time of late, and with lefty Ryan Rowland-Smith on the mound for Seattle, Macha has the right-handed hitting Gomez in the lineup in place of the left-handed Edmonds.
Here’s the rest of the lineup:
Weeks  2B
Hart  RF
Fielder  1B
Braun  LF
McGehee  3B
Lucroy  C
Gomez  CF
Escobar  SS
Bush  P
