Thornburg is 3rd pitcher taken by Brewers

If there’s one thing the Brewers need it’s pitching, and that’s exactly what they’re going after in the early rounds of the 2010 First-Year Player Draft.

With the third pick, the Brewers drafted right-hander Tyler Thornburg out of Charleston Southern.Thornburg, a junior from Atlanta, throws a power fastball that can run up to 95 mph and an above average changeup with excellent arm speed when he throws it.
Additionally, he throws a “get-me-over slow curve” at 68-71 mph as well as a hard breaking ball — which he usually throws out of the zone — at 75-78 mph to get strikeouts.
Physically, Thornburg is undersized, but athletic and uses a delivery similar to that of the Giants’ Tim Lincecum.
For Charleston Southern, Thornburg typically hits cleanup while playing right field on Friday before being the designated hitter on Saturday and taking the mound Sunday.
His scouting report suggests he will need to learn to throw his breaking ball for strikes to remain a starter, but would otherwise be a good arm out of the bullpen.
